Washington Street gallery presents “Construction,” the recent work of studio resident Murat Recevik. Please join us for an opening reception June 2 at 6 pm at 321 Washington Street, Somerville. The show will be on view through June 16. Gallery hours are Saturdays from 12 to 4 pm.
Recevik creates dynamic three-dimensional forms from salvaged materials that shift and manipulate their environments, actively constructing new space. Using springs, coils, poles, string and other detritus, large round mountings sprout delicate limbs, with space becoming concentrated as it becomes disjointed. These spatially fluctuating works can feel something like abstract clocks, intricate yet minimal, reminding us of the passage of time.
Says Recevik of his most recent body of work, “My new work explores the repurposing of discarded items into compositions. These compositions are not just static structures, but whole environments. These environments are in constant flux. This work evolved from my earlier work, focusing on the reconstruction of cast-off materials. Now, this reconstructing is accomplished in a more minimal way.”
An industrial palette of grays, browns and blacks speaks to the nature of the materials Recevik uses to create his work. The shapes and materials speak for themselves, leaving room to notice the delicate movements and changes in the pieces. “Construction” is an opportunity to notice and become connected to the gentle and ever-present passage from one moment to the next.
