RECEPTION:
October 5, 2019 from 6-8 PM
ON VIEW:
October 5, 2019 to October 27, 2019 Saturdays and Sundays from 12-4 PM
The Washington Street gallery presents “Scribing: An Art of the 21stCentury,” with Kelvy Bird. Scribing, a visual practice that maps ideas as people talk, is presented here as art. This exhibit also features three workshops: The Art of Scribing, Levels of Listening, and Systems Scribing.
Both Bird’s own work and an array of examples from around the world give an overview of this increasingly popular practice. Viewers familiar with sketch noting, white boarding, flip charting, or other forms of visual documentation will find in the exhibit and workshops opportunities to learn more about this unusual art form. Practitioners-as-artists combine 2D representation with modeling and awareness-based methods for a group, ranging in size anywhere between 12 and 10,000 people. Scribing helps the group become aware of their systems, see and sense their situations and dynamics, and consequently informs conscious action.
Local resident and global practitioner Kelvy Bird has curated original large-scale pieces, reproductions from digital archives, and videos of drawings being created. An explanation of each piece helps viewers find their way into the practice—which usually occurs in real-time at a client site, in a meeting setting, or for any group of people who are looking for both awareness and good decision-making.
Workshops
Three 3-hour workshops offer basic frameworks and tools, and address the application of scribing back into a participant’s working context. All experience levels welcome.
The Art of Scribing: Sunday, October 6 from 9am-12pm
Learn about the “art of scribing”—a way to visually represent ideas while people talk—and its role in transforming conversation and decision-making. Participants will explore the profession, learn 4 Levels of Scribing, and experiment with scribing conversation.
Levels of Listening: Saturday, October 12 from 9am-12pm
Listening is a cornerstone of all facilitative work. This session includes a review of "Levels of Listening" (by Otto Scharmer) as they apply to scribing. Participants will practice conversing and drawing with different levels: factual, relational, and generative. They will also apply insights back to their own profession or life.
Systems Scribing: Sunday, October 13 from 9am-12pm
Dive into the basics of systems scribing and develop a framework based on systems thinking, systems being, and systems living. Participants will learn specific methods and techniques for recognizing basic feedback loops in conversation and mapping systems, including 2D modeling.
Costs
Rate One: $100 (Working Professionals)
Rate Two: $50 (Students, Artists)
