New Language Collaborative / Nate McBride solo

Come out for an evening of free jazz and improvised music with a set by New Language Collaborative (Ellwood Epps, Glynis Lomon, Eric Zinman, and Syd Smart) as well as a rare solo performance by Nate McBride.

New Language Collaborative is a quartet comprised of Ellwood Epps - Trumpet; Glynis Lomon - Cello; Eric Zinman - Piano; and Yedidyah Syd Smart - Drums

Syd Smart, a legendary drummer, his spent his life using music to create community. He received a Black Music Fellowship to teach and study at Bennington College in Vermont and was the founder of "Friends of Great Black Music", a Boston based organization established in the early 1970's to support local artists involved in the music in the African and African-American Diasporas. He is co-founder of Boston's annual John Coltrane Memorial Concert. Syd is most recently known for his work with the Jimmy Lyons Quartet back in the 70s, with Stan Strickland and "Express Yourself", New Language Collaborative, Samba Viva, Ann Silverman Band, The Tefilah Band of Beth El Temple Center, and action painter, Nancy Ostrovsky.

Trumpeter Ellwood Epps lives and works in Montreal, where he leads Togetherness!, a quintet which plays music from South Africa and beyond. In addition to playing often with Montrealers including Josh Zubot, Michel F Côté and Alexandre St-Onge, John Heward, Lori Freedman, and Jean Derome, Epps has made music with Steve Lacy, William Parker, John Butcher, Henry Grimes, Axel Dörner, and Marshall Allen. He is co-founder and artistic director of l'Envers and co-founder of the Mardi Spaghetti series and has also worked as codirector of the Festival of New Trumpet Music Canada.

Pianist Eric Zinman studied composition with Bill Dixon, George Russell and Jimmy Guiffre. Beginning in 1987 he produced a number of ensembles with Laurence Cook, Craig Schildhauer, John Voigt, Syd Smart and Glynis Lomon. In the mid 2000s he began to tour Europe with Mario Rechtern and later Linda Sharrock. He has played with post rock greats drummer Weasel Walter and noise guitarist Sheik Anorak. His activity has been heard in theater, dance, film and poetry. As he is fond of saying “Music is two souls rubbing together”. He believes music is an essential part of the human story.

Improvising cellist, vocalist and aquasonic player Glynis Lomon graduated from Bennington College in 1975 with a degree in Music/Black Music. At Bennington she studied with musician/composer Bill Dixon and continued to perform and record with his ensembles until his recent death. Glynis has also been privileged to play with Arthur Brooks, Milford Graves Jimmy Lyons, Cecil Taylor, Butch Morris, William Parker, Joe Morris, Greta Buck, Masashi Harada, Lowell Davidson, Raqib Hassan and many others. For almost a decade she and multi reed player PEK performed in the Boston area with their group Leap of Faith.


Nate McBride is a versatile double-bassist and electric bassist and an integral member of the Chicago and Boston free jazz and improvised music scenes. He has performed with such important musicians as Pandelis Karayorgis, Jorrit Dijkstra, Jeb Bishop, Dennis Gonzalez, and Ken Vandermark. Though McBride plays around Boston frequently in a number of settings, this is a rare solo performance for electric bass and electronics.
